Remodels

Questions to Ask Before a Remodel or a Repipe in Your Home | During this season, many homeowners begin planning the spring and summer projects they want, or need, for their homes. Some projects may require only a small investment of time or money, such as cleaning out the garage or planting flowers for color. Others naturally require more planning and consideration, such as upgrading your plumbing system or remodeling a bathroom or kitchen.

If your project includes remodeling areas with plumbing, it’s worth considering the piping hidden behind the walls. These unseen components play a big role in supporting the beautiful finishes you’ll enjoy every day.

Many homeowners are surprised by how much plumbing can impact a remodel. Moving sinks, showers, toilets, dishwashers, or laundry connections can affect cost, timing, and even design choices. And when walls or floors are already open, it can be an ideal time to update older shutoffs, drains, supply lines, or other hidden components.

As a Diamond Club member, asking these questions early gives you the opportunity to plan thoughtfully, avoid surprises, and protect the investment you’re making in your home. One of the best times to start these conversations is during your annual maintenance visit.

Repipes

Maybe remodeling isn’t on your list this year, but you may be noticing some frustrating plumbing challenges. If so, you’re not alone. These are some of the most common questions homeowners ask:

  • Do I really need a repipe?
  • How do I know if my pipes are too old?
  • Are leaks a warning sign?
  • Is low water pressure caused by aging piping?
  • Can rusty or discolored water mean something is wrong?
  • Should I wait until there’s a major leak?

These are great questions and often just the beginning. We’ll be sharing a series of articles to help walk through them together. And if something feels more urgent, we’re always here to help. You can call or text us at 253.448.8168 or email clientcare@atyourserviceplumbing.com anytime.

Important Information Before a Repipe: Signs Your Home May Be Ready

Some common clues include:

  • Low or inconsistent water pressure
  • Frequent leaks or repeated repairs
  • Rust-colored, metallic-smelling, or discolored water
  • Older galvanized or polybutylene piping
  • Uneven hot water delivery
  • Pipes that may be nearing the end of their useful life

A Repipe Is About More Than Fixing Leaks

Many homeowners find that a repipe can also bring:

  • Better water pressure
  • Cleaner, clearer water
  • Fewer unexpected repairs
  • Improved reliability
  • Increased resale appeal
  • Greater peace of mind

What Types of Homes Often Need Repiping?

You may be wondering:

  • Are galvanized steel pipes a concern?
  • How long do copper pipes typically last?
  • Do homes built in the 1950s–1980s need updates?
  • Is my neighborhood known for aging plumbing systems?

If you’re noticing reduced water pressure at some or all fixtures, or discoloration in your water, it may be a sign of galvanized steel piping or other aging plumbing conditions.

Because of differences in water chemistry, these pipes may last as little as 25 years or, in some homes, as long as 70 years. Temperature can also play a role, and in many homes, hot water lines tend to corrode faster than cold lines. It’s common for homeowners to first notice changes, such as rusty water or reduced hot-side flow.

If your home has copper piping, its longevity depends on several factors, including the type of copper used, how it was installed, and the pH of your water. Many homes were built with Type M copper, which is thinner. If the pipe ends were not properly prepared during installation, this can contribute to pinhole leaks over time.

Additionally, if your water’s pH is below 7, it can gradually react with the pipe material, potentially leading to leaks.

Copper remains a reliable material today and is often paired with PEX piping. In our repipes, we typically use a combination of PEX and Type L copper (a thicker, more durable option).

If you’ve heard neighbors replacing their water or drain lines, it may be a sign that your home could experience similar challenges over time, since homes in the same neighborhood are often built around the same time and share similar water conditions.

Material Choices Matter

Most homeowners ask about:

  • PEX piping – flexible, efficient, and cost-effective
  • Copper piping – durable, time-tested, and a premium option

The best choice depends on your home, your goals, and your long-term plans.

We’ve also seen that homes with CPVC piping can begin to experience failures over time, especially as the material ages. After multiple repairs, many homeowners choose to replace the system to help avoid ongoing disruption and potential damage.

How Disruptive Is the Repiping Process?

You may be wondering:

  • How long does it take?
  • Will we be without water?
  • Do walls need to be opened?
  • Can we stay in the home?
  • How messy is it?
  • Are permits and inspections required?

Most whole-home water repipes are completed in about 2–4 days. During working hours, the water will typically need to be off, but if you are staying in the home, we can often coordinate temporary water access in the mornings and evenings. This is something we’ll walk through together during the discovery process.

Depending on your goals, especially if you want to fully remove older piping, some walls or ceilings may need to be opened. We always work to minimize this as much as possible.

When repairs are needed afterward, we’re happy to refer trusted professionals, like Magenta Home Services, who specialize in restoring walls and finishes. Our focus is on making sure your plumbing system is done right while helping coordinate the rest with people we trust.

At Your Service Plumbing is committed to protecting your home and leaving it as clean—or cleaner—than we found it.

Permits & Peace of Mind

Most jurisdictions require permits and inspections when replacing plumbing systems. We handle this entire process for you.

Having a third-party inspection provides reassurance that everything was completed properly and to code. We also use quality materials and stand behind our work with a 20-year warranty on water repipes and 10 years on drains.

Timing Can Save Money & Stress

Repiping before a major leak or before a remodel can often save significantly compared to waiting for something to fail.

Making decisions outside of a crisis is almost always less stressful. Many homeowners don’t realize how close they may be to an unexpected repair.

Taking a proactive approach can improve water quality, restore pressure, help prevent damage, and ultimately enhance the value of your home.
